At MUMA Driving School, we know that starting your driver journey begins with your Learner Licence. It's the first step on the mahi to independence and more opportunities for you and your whānau. Here's what it takes—and how we support you at every turn:

You must be at least 16 years old to apply for a learner's licence.

When you're ready, come into the MUMA Driving School, AA or VTNZ. You'll:

  • Complete the DL1 application form

  • Present proof of identity (and your address)

  • Pass an eyesight test (bring glasses or contact lenses if you need them)

  • Have your photo taken and provide a signature

  • There is a fee, but you may be eligible for support to get this cost covered, so talk to us and we can help.

The theory test is computer‑based with 35 questions about New Zealand road rules and safe driving. To pass, you need to get at least 32 right.

Once you pass, you’ll receive a temporary Learner Licence on the spot, with your plastic card arriving soon after. That means you're legally able to start learning to drive—just remember:

  • Always have a supervisor (a fully licensed driver with at least two years of experience in the same class) in the passenger seat,

  • Display L‑plates clearly on the front and back of the vehicle,

  • Adhere to a zero blood-alcohol limit,

  • Only carry other passengers if your supervisor agrees

At MUMA, we guide you through each of these steps with clear explanations, practice resources from the Drive website, and kaupapa-based coaching in a safe, welcoming environment. Whether Māori, Pasifika, or from another community, we ensure you get the understanding and encouragement you need to pass confidently.

Take your first step with us—prepare well, bring your whānau, and start your journey toward freedom on the road.
